Common Drug Testing Mistakes

1Assuming every drug test is the same
Not all tests detect the same drugs, use the same specimen type, or have the same cutoff levels. Before selecting a test, consider what substances you need to screen for and whether urine, oral fluid or another specimen is right for your program. The right test starts with understanding your testing goals.
2Choosing a test based only on price
Cost per test matters — but it shouldn’t be the only consideration. Panel configuration, cutoff levels, collection method, ease of use, specimen validity features and the overall workflow all affect the value of a product. Don’t just compare the price. Compare the solution.
3Treating a preliminary result as the final answer
Rapid drug tests provide an initial screening result. A presumptive positive may require additional testing using a more specific analytical method, depending on the program and applicable requirements. Understand what happens after a non-negative result before implementing a program.
4Forgetting that policies matter
A drug-testing program isn’t simply a box of test cups. Have clear policies covering who is tested, when testing occurs, how results are handled and what happens after a violation — and apply them consistently. Requirements vary, so seek appropriate legal or regulatory guidance when developing or changing policies.
5Not keeping up with changing needs
The drug-testing landscape continues to evolve. Fentanyl and norfentanyl have been incorporated into federal workplace testing requirements, with changes taking effect in 2025. The panel that worked several years ago may not be the right panel today.
